The Savior’s Grief

Evangelist Gypsy Smith said that once, when a group of gypsies were forced to cross a swollen stream, a great number of men were drowned. One young man made a desperate attempt to save his mother who kept clinging to him. Several times he pushed her away, saying, “Let go, Mother, and I can save you.” But she would not heed him and was lost. At the funeral, the son stood by his mother’s grave and said over and over, “How hard I tried to save you, Mother, but you wouldn’t let me!” These are the tragic words that we shall hear Jesus Christ say to many in eternity one day, “How hard I tried to save you, but you wouldn’t let me. Your will was the great hindrance.”

A man had the duty to raise a drawbridge to allow the steamers to pass on the river below and to lower it again for trains to cross over on land. One day, this man’s son visited him, desiring to watch his father at work. Quite curious, as most boys are, he peeked into a trapdoor that was always left open so his father could keep an eye on the great machinery that raised and lowered the bridge. What Kind of People Are in Your Town?

“Judge not, that ye be not judged” (Matt. 7:1). There was once a wise old man sitting at the gate of an ancient city. A young traveler stopped before entering the city and asked the old man, “What kind of people live in this town?” The wise man answered with a question, “What kind of people were in the town you just came from?” “Oh, they were liars and cheats and thugs and drunks, terrible people,” the young traveler replied. The old man shook his head, “The people in this town are the same way.” Later another stranger paused to ask the same question, and again the wise man questioned his questioner, “What kind of people did you just leave?” The second traveler answered, “Oh, I left a fine town.
